THE BENWAHS NEED A HARD HITTING, DEDICATED, KICK ASS DRUMMER

THE BENWAHS NEED A HARD HITTING, DEDICATED, KICK ASS DRUMMER.

THE BENWAHS are a female fronted, Camden based, power-pop punk band. Consisting of:

Suzie Benwah, 28, lead vox & rhythm guitar &

Karen Benwah, 28, bass & BV's.

Our drummer is gutted to be leaving but is moving back to Newcastle to work and get married.

To date The Benwahs have played on Hollyoaks, gigging the SU:BAR, recorded a single with a top producer and have generated a lot of interest. We now just need the right drummer to get us back out there with the opportunity to present ourselves as a full band to those who are interested.

The Benwahs have extensively gigged Camden and Islington.

The Benwahs are looking for a drummer who is 100% dedicated. Someone who wants to spend the rest of his/her life hitting drums! Someone who wants top be a part of a band, and is willing to give every spare minute to pushing THE BENWAHS. In return we can give you good times, good friends and a life doing exactly what you want, music.

If you feel this is you check out THE BENWAHS and get in touch.

THE BENWAHS HAVE FILMED HOLLYOAKS!!!

HEY BENWAHS FANS!!!!

THE BENWAHS HAVE FILMED HOLLYOAKS!!!! WOHOOO!!!!

DRIVING DOWN THE MOTORWAY LATE ON MONDAY NIGHT THE BENWAHS EXCITED CHATTER FILLED THE CAR. LIKE LITTLE KIDS HEADING TO ALTON TOWERS THE BENWAHS MADE THEIR WAY TO LIVERPOOL. TALK OF HOLLYOAKS AND THIS BEING OUR BIG BREAK WAS THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR JOURNEY.

STEPPING OUT OF THE CAR AT 11.30PM AND STARING UP AT A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE COUNTRY PUB HOTEL THE BENWAHS HAD ARRIVED! WALKING TOWARDS THE ENTRANCE WITH SLIGHT TREPIDATION WE HEARD "ALRIGHT MATE, PLAY US A SONG!". WE HAD MET OUR FIRST SCOUSERS!!!

WE DROPPED OUR BAGS IN OUR ROOMS AND HEADED OUT TO THE BEER GARDEN FOR A QUICK NIGHT CAP. AS SOON AS WE TOOK OUR SEATS THE SCOUSERS ROUNDED THE CORNER, PULLED UP A PEW AND GOT DOWN TO MAKING US FEEL RIGHT AT HOME! WITH QUICK INTRODUCTIONS THE COMEDY DUO OF THE GROUP, TONY AND BURNIE, BEGAN REGALING STORIES OF OLD AND SOON HAD US CRYING WITH LAUGHTER AND WANTING TO COME BACK TO LIVERPOOL MORE OFTEN THAN WOULD BE POSSIBLE!

FEELING QUITE RELAXED AND CHILDISHLY EXCITED ABOUT THE MORROW WE HEADED TO BED.

6AM THE ALARM SOUNDED AND SUZIE BENWAH JUMPED OUT OF BED AND INTO THE SHOWER. TODAY WAS GOING TO BE A GOOD DAY.

LIKE TWO GIRLS GETTING READY FOR A NIGHT ON THE TOWN SUZIE AND KAREN BENWAH DID HAIR AND MAKE UP WHILE HIGH SPEED CHATTING ABOUT THE DAY AHEAD!

AT 8AM THE BENWAHS ENTERED LIME PICTURES STUDIOS.

WITH WARM WELCOMES FROM EVERYBODY WE GRABBED SOME BREAKFAST AND MADE OUR WAY TO THE S.U.BAR!

LIKE ANY TV SET THE S.U.BAR WAS TINY IN REAL LIFE! THE BENWAHS SET UP THEIR EQUIPMENT AND, SCARED TO TOUCH ANYTHING FOR CONTINUITY REASONS, SAT AT A TABLE AND TALKED IN HUSHED TONES ABOUT OUR FORTHCOMING TV DEBUT PUNCTUATED WITH "OH MY GOD, LOOK AT THAT!" "OH MY GOD, WE'RE GONNA BE ON HOLLYOAKS" "OH MY GOD, THERE'S JUSTIN!".

AFTER HALF AN HOUR OF THE CREW SETTING UP LIGHTS AND SET THE EXTRAS FILED IN AND THE BENWAHS STOOD WITH DRY MOUTHS, NERVOUS GLANCES AND "THIS IS IT GUYS, ROCK OUT AND KNOCK 'EM DEAD!"

OUR TIME WAS NOW AND WE WERE GOING TO MAKE IT GOOD!

THE BENWAHS STEPPED ON STAGE, DONNED THEIR GUITARS AND STICKS AND GOT INTO ROCK GOD MODE!

FILMING BEGAN!!!

WE DON'T WANT TO RUIN ANY STORY LINES OR HOLLYOAKS SECRETS SO WE'LL JUST SAY THE TYPICAL STOP-START NATURE OF FILMING PURSUED FOR THE NEXT FOUR HOURS. THE BENWAHS PLAYED, THE AUDIENCE WATCHED, HOLLYOAKS CHARACTERS ACTED AND EVERYTHING WENT SMOOTHLY!

IN NO TIME AT ALL WE WERE TOLD, "THAT'S A RAP, THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK TODAY, YOU'RE FREE TO GO".

AS WE STEPPED OFF THE STAGE NEIL, THE SOUND GUY, ASKED US IF WE WANTED TO WATCH THE FILMING BACK ON THE MONITORS. THE BENWAHS SAT WITH HANDS OVER EYES AND THOUGHTS OF PLEASE LET THIS LOOK GOOD AND AS NEIL PRESSED PLAY THE BENWAHS CAME TO LIFE ON STAGE.

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THE BENWAHS HAD SEEN THEMSELVES PLAY AND WITH SMILES CREEPING OVER OUR LIPS AND EYES GLUED TO THE SCREEN WE ALL AGREED WE DIDN'T LOOK HALF BAD!

THE BENWAHS HAD DONE IT! IT WAS ON FILM, LOOKING GOOD AND WITH NOTHING LEFT BUT TO BATHE IN OUR OWN GLORY WE SAT BACK AND WATCHED THE MONITORS. OH MY GOD, WE'RE GOING TO BE ON HOLLYOAKS!!!!!!!

NEIL THEN TOOK THE BENWAHS ON A GUIDED TOUR AROUND THE WHOLE OF THE HOLLYOAKS SET! WE SAW EVERYONES HOUSES, THE VILLAGE, THE DOG PUB, THE LOFT CLUB AND BOY, WERE THEY REAL! ONE OF THE HOUSES WAS A WHOLE FOUR BEDROOM HOUSE WITH A DOWNSTAIRS KITCHEN AND LIVING ROON AND EVERYTHING!!!

INCREDULOUSLY SUZIE BENWAH ASKED "AND THIS WAS LITERALLY BUILT JUST FOR HOLLYOAKS?" AND EVEN MORE INCREDULOUSLY NEIL REPLIED "YEAH! THAT'S WHAT I'M SHOWING YOU...THE SET!".

IN MY DEFENSE, IT WAS MASSIVE!!!

AFTER NIPPING BACK TO THE LOVELY HOTEL FOR A QUICK BITE TO EAT THE BENWAHS WERE BACK ON THE ROAD.

HEADING HOME WITH TIREDNESS CREEPING THROUGH THEIR BONES BUT EXCITEMENT KEEPING THEM AWAKE, THE BENWAHS FELL INTO A SILENT THOUGHTFULNESS, EACH LEFT TO OUR OWN IMAGININGS WITH THE ODD "DID YOU SEE THAT BLOKE", "WHAT ABOUT WHEN WE HAD TO DO THAT". THE RETURN JOURNEY ENDED IN NO TIME AND SAYING GOODBYE AT THE TUBE STATION WE ALL PARTED WAYS. WITH SECRET SMILES AND FEELINGS OF ACHIEVEMENT WE ALL HEADED HOME SAFE IN THE KNOWLEDGE WE HAD DONE OUR BEST AND FELLING REALLY PROUD TO BE PART OF THE BENWAHS!

THE BENWAHS HOLLYOAKS EPISODE IS SCHEDUALED TO BE AIRED SEPTEMBER 10TH BUT THE BENWAHS WILL MAKE SURE TO REMIND YOU! WE DON'T WANT ANYONE MISSING OUR BIG TELEVISION DEBUT!!!

BENWAHS UPDATE!!!

BENWAHS UPDATE!!!

Hey everyone!!!!

The Benwahs haven’t blogged for ages so thought I’d do a quick update!!!

I, (Suzie Benwah) have just had the most beautiful easter at home in Birmingham. Eating loads of chocolate and a gorgeous mom and dads home cooked dinner, I am feeling truly content!!!!

As for The Benwahs, we have had some brilliant gigs lately and feedback had just been getting better and better. We almost feel famous with all the attention we’re getting! Especially as a couple of you beautiful myspace peeps have been coming to the gigs, which really does make us feel famous!!!

We’ve added a couple of new songs to our set and now really feel at home on the stage in front of a crowd. We love playing and we love nights out, so this really is the best job we could wish for! We’re also meeting some brilliant bands on the scene too. We blogged before about the new bands comp for Glasto but unfortunately we didn’t get through. But to be honest, we really don’t care!!! The gigging is enough for us at the mo and we can’t wait to see what happens in the near future with the band.

The Benwahs next gig is at The Dublin Castle in Camden, London Saturday 5th April. We gigged there before on a Saturday and it was absolutely ace so really can’t wait for this one. We hope you can all make it down to join in the fun and frolics of yet another Saturday gig! With no alarm rudely awakening you the next day we can really let our hair down!!!! So here’s to the 5th!!!!

That’s all for now,

Big Love and happy easter,

The Benwahs xxx

THE BENWAHS ARE ON THEIR WAY!

AT 22.00 HOURS ON 27TH JANUARY 2008, THE BENWAHS SENT THEIR ENTRY TO GLASTONBURYS NEW TALENT COMPETITION!

THE BENWAHS have been really busy this week. After a brilliant, knackering, enlightening, exciting two days in the studio, THE BENWAHS came out with two tracks, "Easy Now You've Gone" and "I Like You". And thanks to a quick photo session after recording, we also got our promo shot! We had what we needed for the Glasto comp! We also had our long awaited audio for THE BENWAHS myspace!

But back to the studio shenanigans!

THE BENWAHS got to Zed One Studios in Camden at 10am on Thursday 24th January. Waiting for the studio to open, THE BENWAHS excitedly chatted about the day ahead. We needed two tracks recorded and hoped to record another two or three live tracks to put on myspace.

"Easy", we said. "We're tight, we know what we're doing and the songs aren't that complicated. We'll be finished in no time".

Walking into Zed One, THE BENWAHS met Pete; engineer and producer.
Unsure of how to begin these things, THE BENWAHS hung around while Pete set up the drum room and the live room.

Mikey then went in to get comfortable on the drums and myself and Kaz set up our guitars with the sounds we wanted. We explained to Pete that we hadn't been in a studio for a fair while so he talked us through the schedule.

Setting up would take about three hours. We'd then play live a few times to record the drums. Bass would be laid down next, followed by guitar, then vocals and lastly any little twiddly bits like tambourine, triangle! etc

THE BENWAHS played live and got the drums down in quick time. Although Mikey was in the drum room, we all had headphones on and could see him playing through the sliding double-glazed glass doors! We were confident! It was gonna sound ace!

Next, karen recorded bass. Pete suggested some different bass ideas which ended up sounding ace, so with some slight alterations, the bass was down too.

Next was my turn! Suzie, recording guitar!

Now, I've always said I'm a lyricist, composer, vocalist, any of the above, and that I only play guitar to write songs. Don't get me wrong, I love playing guitar and I love rocking out on stage, but I'd never classify myself as an actual guitarist!

Well, I gotta say, recording guitar, at a fast pace, with no bassist or drummer to look at, no-one in the room to share smiles and glances, knowing that this guitar take would forever be engraved onto disc, yeah, that kinda threw me!

The main take was fine, but then I had to do a couple of drop ins and drop outs. Being suddenly launched into the middle of a song you're hearing through your headphones with a voice over telling you to come in when you know where you are, even for someone who wrote the songs, surely that's gotta be difficult!!!! Hasn't it?!

Well, Suzie Benwah had trouble. While the rest of THE BENWAHS sat patiently waiting, I took forever to record guitar! Kaz Benwah had to come into the room in the end to count me in!!!

As embarrassing as it was, it did prove to me how important it is to practice, practice, practice and know every little nuance of each song before waltzing into a studio and hoping for the best!

So just before six, end of day one, Kaz Benwah recorded backing vocals for "I Like You" using my live vocal as a guide track. Ever the professional, she was done in ten minutes!

After packing down, saying thanks goodbye to Pete and having a quick tipple in the pub, THE BENWAHS threw some shapes in the alley way, took some snaps and produced our promo shot. Not bad for a days work!!!

Friday 25th January, 10am. Bleary eyed, due to two days of getting up early, Suzie Benwah dragged herself towards Zed One Studios.

Today, I knew, was vocals day!

Stepping into the studio, I said, in a gravelly, thick, morning voice, "Morning Pete, I'm so not used to these early starts!". Which was swiftly followed by, "Nor me Suz. Now, you ready to do your vocals?".

Manically doing singing exercise while Pete went out to get his morning coffee, I didn't have time to get nervous. So after a couple of practice runs to get the vocal chords opened up, I went for it. I did three takes of each song then went back into the control room to hear them back. Listening to them through amazing studio speakers, I was actually quite impressed!! Not bad for a morning voice!

Pete then picked up a gibson guitar from behind him and said, "I've got some really good ideas for harmonies". And as he played, he looked expectantly at me and said, "Well, sing along then".

After some coaxing, I sang along! Some way below my range, some way higher than my range, some I couldn't even hear fitting with the original melody. But I faithfully went into the live room and gave them my best shot. It was really surprising how easily it came to me and how, as soon as I began singing the harmonies, it sounded like they'd always been a part of the song!

And that was me done! The vocal was down.

We spent the next hour doing some tambourine and guitar feedback bits. Then it was time to mix down. Pete told us to skedaddle for a bit, as it would take two hours just to set the initial levels. So off to the pub it was!

Sitting with a glass of red wine, in a pub at 3pm, having just recorded vocals and guitar feedback, I was feeling pretty pleased with myself! What a life! So for the next two hours THE BENWAHS talked about life as rock stars and how we really couldn't wait!!!!

At ten to six on Friday 25th January 2008, a CD was born. THE BENWAHS first ever recording. The first time THE BENWAHS had actually heard what they sounded like. Thank god we liked it!

So, with a massive thank you to Pete, an amazing, friendly guy, with ideas and thoughts and a heart that actually cares, and to Zed One Studios for being comfy, friendly and a great place to record, thank you.

For now,

Big love,

THE BENWAHS SECOND GIG!

THE BENWAHS PLAYED THEIR SECOND GIG LAST NIGHT AT LARK IN THE PARK, ISLINGTON, LONDON!

LARK GIG FLYER

Courtesy of kezzaxx2007

Not too far from Angel tube station lies a pub, wood panelled and smelling of burgers just cooked. The pub in which THE BENWAHS were to execute their second gig!

Stepping in and ordering a beer and two vodka lemonades, (Mikey BENWAH also ordered a cheese burger and fries, which he said was lovely!), THE BENWAHS scanned their surroundings and decided to mingle.

We met TODGER, the headlining band, a six piece who had brought with them one guitar amp and plenty of rock energy! and BARRELHOUSE, a four piece, who had thankfully brought another amp and a drum kit! We secured the use of their equipment and got ready for sound check.

TODGER sound checked first, then THE BENWAHS, followed by BARRELHOUSE and last of all ALAMODE, who had just turned up and were to kick off the night.

The sound on stage wasn't brilliant. The bass was put through a direct input into the PA which gives it a slightly different sound and the vocal through the feedback monitor was so loud it made me feel like I was drowning out the drums! Having no-one in the audience to give us the thumbs up through out our sound check we truly were at the mercy of the sound engineer, whom, of course, we all totally trusted! But hearing BARRELHOUSE, four boys playing intricate bluesy-rock tunes and being absolutely amazing, THE BENWAHS were feeling slightly on edge about their imminent gig.

Having a quick cigarette outside I managed to ask the boys from BARRELHOUSE about our sound and if all the levels sounded OK! They assured us we sounded cool and our minds were put to rest!

So after a couple of drinks, and the meeting and greeting of everyone who came to see us, it was time for THE BENWAHS to step on stage.

The pub had a great atmosphere and all the bands were really nice people who stuck around to hear each other (which doesn't often happen as most musos are totally up themselves and only emerge from the beer garden when it's their time to play!!!) The pub is also quite big overall but it's split into three different sections, so the section with the stage filled up pretty quick, giving you the sense of playing to a massive crowd! THE BENWAHS launched into their first song and to be honest the rest was a blur! The time goes so quickly when you're playing on stage and then suddenly you're announcing your last song.

I had an brilliant time though, feeling totally at home and confident with the crowd, and the applause after each song only spurs you on to try harder and harder to impress!

We ended the set with "I LIKE YOU", a crazily paced song that gets everyone unconsciously bouncing on their heels, and as if it had just began we were packing up our guitars to make room for TODGER!

After a couple more bevvies and congrats from the crowd, the music ceased and the lights were turned up. Another end to another gig!

We headed towards Angel tube on a high, with talk of how to improve and new material to introduce at the next gig.

Another great night had by all BENWAH BOYS and BENWAH BABES!!!

Big love for now,

THE BENWAHS REHEARSAL!

THE BENWAHS  finally rehearsed last night after a whole month of not seeing each other! What with Christmas and New Year THE BENWAHS  just didn't get a chance to meet up over December.
So last night we had our long awaited rehearsal at Enterprise Studios, which is right by Tottenham Court Road, central for everyone!
Stepping into the sweaty, dark, dingy room and hearing the dull thud of the bass from downstairs, we all came alive with pure rock-out energy!
Gabbled talk and excited laughter of our last gig, Christmas and new year was the soundtrack of our setting up. Shortly followed by our dreams and aspirations for the future of THE BENWAHS!!
After a good hour of pure talk we all stood poised for the intro of "IT'S NOT ME", our opening song, but after a few seconds of nervous glances and unusual silence, we all confessed we were scared to play in case everything had been forgotten!
"Sod it" we said, "lets just rock out and see what happens!"
And true to THE BENWAHS style we launched into the first song and totally rocked it like our lives depended on it! It was gonna be alright, our unconditional memories of build-ups, build-downs and drop-outs came flooding back like we'd played yesterday!
We managed to get through the 8 song set with hardly any mistakes!!! And with 20 minutes to go decided to play through our two closing songs, "I DON'T GIVE A..." and "I LIKE YOU" at break neck speed. This is a BENWAH tradition, to get our energies up and excitement flowing!!!
And, seeming like we'd just got there, midnight was suddenly upon us! We packed up, talking of our next rehearsal and imminent gig.
Walking to Tottenham Court Road tube it dawned on us it was the beginning of BENWAH KAZ'S, the bassists, birthday! With an impromptu HAPPY BIRTHDAY to BENWAH KAZ at the tube turnstiles, we all said our goodbyes and made our way home.
Another brilliant rehearsal for THE BENWAHS!!!!
I really do love my job!!!!

For now,
Big love,

And remember BENWAH BOYS and BENWAH BABES, THE BENWAHS are playing LARK IN THE PARK in ISLINGTON on 16 JANUARY. ON STAGE AT 9.30PM, SO DON'T BE LATE!!!!!

INTRODUCING THE BENWAHS!

THE BENWAHS have discovered the world of blogging!

THE BENWAHS are a female fronted power-pop punk band, with female bass and male drums.

We have... (drum roll (from Mikey)),

Benwah Scuz (me!) on guitar and vocals.

Benwah Kaz on bass and backing vocals.

and Benwah Mikey on drums.

We are based in London and have been together for a few months. We usually rehearse at Enterprise Studios on Denmark Street, being in the centre is extremely useful! Or Zed One Studios in Camden, (my personal favorite!!!). It has a great atmosphere, comfy, clean rooms and really friendly staff, who'll help you out at the drop of a hat. One of the guys even lent me his guitar when mine broke!!!!

We did our first ever gig on December 6th 2007 at Tommy Flynn's in Camden, which went down a storm, (I'm proud to say!). Tommy's was a brilliant venue. As a prestigious Camden music venue, with punters coming just for the music, it's an intimate setting with a raised stage at the head of an L shaped room. The stage is set right in front of a large window facing the street! Throw some shapes and hope the passers-by notice your style! We played to a packed room and definitely felt this was the first step of our journey.

Our next gig is on January 16th at Lark In The Park in Islington, London. So if you're in or around London, come see us! Grab a pew and a drink and tell us what you think!!!

I'll keep you updated with rehearsals, gigs and studio time so you can follow the journey of THE BENWAHS, rags to riches!!!!!!

That's all for now!!

Big love,
